       There are three primary types of search tools most people use when trying to find information on the World Wide Web.  Several other types of tools are still in existance, but are falling out of favor somewhat as current search engines, etc., are becoming more sophisticated.  Try this link at whatis.com for an excellent description of search engines of various kinds.
       Also, many of these sites [sometimes now described as web portals] are now combining techniques, so some of the descriptions below are only to give a general classification, and may not apply to every aspect of that site.
