Forwarding Your Email

Forwarding Email from Rice to non-Rice account

Note: If you have more than one Rice account (as do Boyd Hemphill, Mary Wiesner, and Cynthia Lanius), do NOT use this method to forward your email from one Rice account to another Rice account. The Rice system automatically forwards all rice.edu email to a single account, called a "mail home."

If you want to forward your @girltech.cs.rice.edu (GirlTECH) email to an other non-Rice account (i.e. houstonisd.org), you'll need to put a .forward ("dot forward") file in /var/spool/forward/<userid>/:

  1. Use your favorite word processor or editor to create a file that contains only your email address on a single line (i.e. hvargas@houstonisd.org).
  2. Save this file as a text-only file (please, not a Microsoft Word file!).
  3. Open an ftp connection to your GirlTECH server account (girltech.cs.rice.edu).
    1. Change your remote directory to /var/spool/forward/<userid>/, where <userid> is the first part of your email address (e.g., hvargas).
    2. Transfer your text file there (Fetch users, click on Put).
    3. Rename it .forward .

Un-Forwarding Email from Rice to non-Rice account

To cancel a Rice-to-no-Rice forward, you simply need to rename your .forward file to something else, like .forward.off :

Open an ftp connection to your GirlTECH server account (girltech.cs.rice.edu).

    1. Change your remote directory to /var/spool/forward/<userid>/ , where <userid> is the first part of your email address (e.g., hvargas).
    2. Click once on the file named .forward .
    3. Rename it something like .forward.off .
