Running the Vacation Program

Creating Your Reply Message

When you activate the vacation program (see instructions below), it automatically emails a personalized reply message to everyone who sends you email. Your personalized reply message lives in a directory named /var/spool/forward/<userid>, in a file named .vacation.msg ("dot vacation dot message").

To create your personalized reply message, cut out the text below and paste it into your favorite PC or Macintosh text editor, then edit the message as you wish, and save the file as TEXT (NOT WordPerfect or Framemaker or any other non-text format) and name it whatever you want to.

Then open an ftp or Fetch connection to GirlTECH server (girltech.cs.rice.edu), change the remote directory to /var/spool/forward/<userid>, set the transfer mode to ASCII or Text, transfer the text file from your local directory, and rename the remote copy to ".vacation.msg" (no quotes).
