  1. The student will explore the Internet to discover various types of business letters and how to properly create cover letters, resumes, and follow-up letters.
  2. The student will word process a cover letter, resume, and follow-up letter.
  3. The student will proof read, modify and edit word processed documents.

Business Computer Information Systems I

Student Web Work Procedure: Prior to developing and/or creating the cover letter, resume, and follow-up letter, students should research how to properly develop these documents using the online sites listed above. In addition, students may search for other related sites.

Class 1:

Cover Letters

  1. Review: Cover Letters: Letters of Application and Inquiry:

  2. Select a job and a company where he/she would like to work.
  3. Create a cover letter (application letter) for that position. The student creates a letter of application.
  4. Save as Cover Letter, and then print the document. Proof read, edit and reprint if necessary.

Class 2:

Resumes

  1. Review: What Resume is Right for me?

  2. Review: Jobweb: Your Guide to Resume Writing: http://www.jobweb.com/catapult/guenov/restips.html
  3. Complete the "Resume Worksheet" to organize information for their resume.
  4. Create a resume using the Resume Wizard in Microsoft Word. The student should use the guidelines below.
    Select any type (Professional - Contemporary - Elegant).
    Decide and select the resume style that is right for you.
    Include the necessary headings and subheadings.
  5. Save the resume on diskette as Resume, and then print the document. Proof read, edit and reprint if necessary.

Class 3:

Thank-You Letters

  2. The student should create a follow-up letter for the interview he/she was able to obtain using the letter of application. The student should create a follow-up letter using the guidelines below.
    The purpose of the follow-up letter is to thank an employment interviewer for his/her time and to reemphasize some of your qualifications that particularly suit you for the job. In addition the follow-up letter should:
    Let the interviewer know you are still interested in the position.
    Return any forms or papers you have taken home to complete.
    Provide any additional data requested by the interviewer you did not have at the time of the interview.
  3. Use modified block style with indented paragraphs using mixed punctuation.
    Save the letter on diskette as FollowUpLetter, and print the document. Proof read, edit and reprint if necessary.
