I am a technology teacher at Foerster Elementary School in the Houston Independent School District. I have had the enormous pleasure of working with all of our fabulous K-5th grade students. I have taught for about 20 years, but have only been at Foerster Elem. since 1999. Foerster has a strong reputation and a teaching staff that is truly remarkable. Our principal, Mrs. Wilma Wilson-Harmon is among the nation's finest and most supportive principals.
In terms of preparation for teaching, I received a B.S. and M.A. Ed. in Business Education from Eastern Kentucky University and a M.Ed. in Elementary Education (with certification in ESL) from Texas Southern University. I frequently participate in summer and school year professional development activities and feel that it is important to keep learning in order to avoid stagnation. I also encourage my students to be life-long learners.
I am also an arm of the fabulous Hu-Linc with the Houston ISD. Our Hu-Linc Specialist, Dr. Sandra McLemore, and the other Hu-Linc leaders are true mentors and supporters for science and technology across the nation. We are truly blessed to have her expertise in our local area. I must also thank Dr. Carlos Solis for being our faithful and patient technology leader. I recently had the very enriching opportunity of participating in the 2003 Science and Math Institute (SMI) at Rice University. Dr. Debbie Jensen and her staff are among the finest in the world! SMI was a very intensive and challenging three-week workshop, but the sessions were hands-on and we were given many materials that we can use with our own students. We also met for several informative follow-up sessions throughout the school year. Since I am our school's Outstanding Young Scientist (science club) Co-sponsor, I have plenty of opportunities to work with our students.
