Mitosis Is for Chromosomes!

Phase Name

Events

Diagram of ONE chromosome

Diagram of Cell

Real Appearance

INTERPHASE

cell growth, DNA replication

PROPHASE

beginning of condensation

towards end, nuclear membrane breaks down

chromosome has replicated but the two copies are joined

METAPHASE

chromosomes arranged at central plane of cell, attached to spindle fibers

can see 2 copies of chromatids, joined by centromere

ANAPHASE

duplicated chromosomes split and the copies separate until they reach the opposite sides of the cells

pop goes the centromere

TELOPHASE

chromosomes de-condense, nuclear membrane reforms

each cell has one of these now. go back to Interphase
