Teaching objectives for this lesson are aligned with national educational standards. The student will critically analyze a given topic and write a persuasive essay.

The student is expected to analyze a topic using these critical thinking skills:

(A)  compare and contrast varying aspects of the topic;

(B)  propose and provide examples of themes that cross the topic;

(C)  connect the topic to historical context, current events, and his/her own experiences;

(D)  use vocabulary, sentence structure, organization, and rhetorical devices appropriate to the audience and purpose;

(E)  use effective sequence and transitions to achieve coherence and meaning;

(F)  analyze relevance of setting and time frame to the topic's meaning;

(G)  identify basic conflicts within the topic;

(H)  analyze human traits, motivations, changes, and stereotypical features that may be associated with the topic;

(I)  use irony, tone, mood, style, and sound of language to contribute to the effect of the essay;

(J)  determine and explain purposes and effects of figurative language, particularly symbolic and metaphoric;

(K)  analyze distinctive features of the topic's genre such as biography, historical fiction, short story, dramatic literature, or poetry;

(L)  compare topic with his/her own life experiences;

(M)  elaborate by using concrete images, figurative language, sensory observation, dialogue, and other rhetorical devices to enhance meaning;

(N)  employ various points of view to communicate effectively;

(O)  use word choice, sentence structure, and repetition to create tone;

(P)  organize ideas in writing to ensure coherence, logical progression, and support for ideas; and

(Q)  proofread and edit as appropriate to produce a final draft by rethinking content, organization, and style to better advance a unique point of view.
