Pythagorean triples

OBJECTIVE:  Students  will explore Pythagorean Theorem using

informations from Internet and following activity.

MATERIALS:  Computer, calculator, graph paper and pencil.

PROCEDURES:

1)   On graph paper, draw segment AB going 5 right and 2 up. Draw both

segments  BC and AD going 2 left and 5 up. Draw Segment DC and

describe how to go from D to C. What shape is ABCD ?

2).  Repeat Exercise 1 with segment AB going 3 right and 5 up, and

segment  BC and segment AD both going 5 left and 3 up.

3).  On the graph paper, draw segment IJ going 3 right and 2 up. Draw

square IJKL on segment IJ. Also draw a surrounding square whose

sides  are parallel to the grid lines. Calculate the area of

square IJKL.  Use square root tables or a calculator to find

the length of segment IJ to hundredth place.

4).  Repeat Exercise 3 for square MNOP, where segment MN is 8 right

and 6 up.

5).  Repeat Exercise 3 for square QRST, where segment  QR  is 2 right

and 1 up.

6).  Repeat Exercise 3 for square UVWX, where segment UV is 5 right

and 4 up.

7).  Copy and complete the table. Use the figure and your work in

Exercises 3-6 to help  you.
