RESEARCH RESULTS

HOUSTON A+ CHALLENGE TEACHER AS A RESEARCHER GRANT

All my algebra students passed the Texas ninth grade math accountability TAKS test. My combo algebra/CS class earned the largest percent of commended scores at Westside High School. The experimental group (EG) CS/Pre-AP Algebra class showed a 23% increase commended on TAKS compared to 8th grade for the same group of students. The control group (CG) is the seven other Pre-AP Algebra classes at Westside HS.

The TeachScheme! Anniversary Workshop Proceedings, page 115
  • By using programming to teach algebra, students were taught to think about and plan solutions with the continuous use of the HTDP design recipe. Student problem-solving skills were enhanced by using graphic lessons and visual products. Algebra lessons emphasized understanding the problem-solving process. These lessons practice processing solutions to problems by developing examples in process charts and on graph paper. Included in these lessons are the Cartesian Plane Program, the Four-Corner Design Recipe, Slope and Graphic Design Lesson, Profit Program Process Chart and My Box Program with physical models.

Latino College Preparatory Academy's Recovery session
  • We (my co-teacher & I) used your graphing exercise for our 10th-grade class in my school's end-of-year "recovery" session. The students had a load of fun, and it pointed up a few interesting things that some students didn't know (and I wouldn't have thought to check)-- such as how to measure the unit width and height of a rectangle they've drawn on grid paper. Yes, clearly our math teaching needs work.

  • Castilleja School, Palo Alto, CA
  • TYou're teaching great algebra AND great programming AND great thinking skills at the same time. Absolutely beautiful! WRITE A FUNCTION that calculates the Y-intercept, given the slope and 1 point. Look at the PATTERN of examples in finding the solutions to the linear equations to develop the function. FOLLOW THE DESIGN RECIPE. Examples first, then design the function to abstract the examples.

Houston Chronicle ViewPoints Editorials March 2006
  • "Teaching algebra as a language improves algebra skills. Its operational signs are the verbs, parentheses and equal signs are conjunctions and everything else is nouns. Once a student grasps these language rules and how they are applied, they can do well in algebra." - William Osborne
So how can that easily be applied? Use Programming to teach algebra and the language of DrScheme.
