Our Directors

Rick Scott earned his bachelors degree in music education from Augustana College, in Rock Island, Illinois. After college graducation, he worked for three years in the Rock Island/Milan School District as director of jazz studies at his Alma Mater, Rock Island High School and as director of bands at Edison Junior High School. He then moved to Austin, Texas where he worked as a full-time musician in the Brazilian music group "Quizumba", and studied with David Neubert at the University of Texas. Rick has taught in Milano ISD in Milano, Texas and joined the H.I.S.D. in 1991 as director of bands at Paul Revere Middle School before opening Westside High School in 2000.

Ms. Porter is the new Associate Director at Westside High School. She previously taught for six years in Florida. The past three years she taught at Seminole High School in the Orlando area. There, she co-directed the 290 member marching band, three concert bands, and was also responsible for teaching two orchestra classes and two AP music theory classes. Ms Porter, originally from Tallahassee, Florida, holds a bachelor's of Music Education degree from Florida State University and this summer she will complete a Master's degree from Florida State as well. As a clarinet player and woodwind instructor, Ms. Porter hopes to contribute to the Westside band alongside Mr. Scott by bringing growth and success to the program. Ms. Porter is thrilled and excited to be joining the Westside Band.
