Our Band

The Westside High School Wolve's band, under the direction of Mr. Richard Scott, was started in the year 2000 as Westside became a new high school. The award-winning band is recognized throughout the West Houston community as the wolves play at public events, such as football games and concerts.

Wind Ensemble

The WIND EMSEBLE is the top performing concert band. Admittance into this class is based on auditions and demands the highest commitment to a performing ensemble. The band participates in all UIL contests and each member will audition for participation in TMEA honor gropus. The WIND ENSEMBLE is a class that meets for(for credit) each school day and each member is required to attend sectionals, a full band rehearsal (once a week), and a 15 minute individual listening outside of the school day 3 times each 6 weeks period. Other rehearsals and clinics will be schduled as needed. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory.

Symphonic Winds

The SYMPHONIC WINDS is the second ranked concert band. The band will participate in al concerts and UIL music competitions. The SYMPHONIC WINDS is a class that meets (for credits) every school day and each member is required to attend sectionals (once a week), and a 15 minute individual listening outside the school day one time each 6 weeks period. Extra rehearsals and clinics will be scheduled as needed. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory.

Concert Band

The CONCERT BAND is the third ranked ensemble. The band will participate in all concerts and depending upon enrollment and instrumentation, participate in music festivals and contests. The CONCERT BAND class meets every school day (for credit). Extra rehearsals and clinics will be scheduled as needed. Attendance at all rehearsals, clinics, and performances is mandatory.

Jazz Band

The JAZZ BAND is open to any interested student who is currently enrolled in the band or orchestra program or no-band students who play bass, guitar, or piano. Interested students must have auditioned and/or have instructor approval before enrolling and/or scales as determined by the director. JAZZ BAND is a two-semester course and students hould be enrolled for the entire year. Special emphasis is placed on style, form, baance, expression, and improvisational skills. The band performs latin, funk, jazz-rock, and blues. The ensemble participates in community events. contests, concerts, and festivals.

Percussion Class

The PERCUSSION CLASS provides instruction on marching and concert percussion techniques, exercises, and ensemble pieces. Each member will audition for participation in TMEA honor groups. Students who enroll in the class will study the elements of marching (battery and pit), and concert percussion. Enrollment for this class is mandatory to participate in marching band. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory.

requirements

Class
All band students are required to have all of their music and a pencil for class everyday. Students are required to purchase their own copy of Foundations for Superior Performance for their specific instrument to have it for class each day.

Marching
All band members are required to attend after-school rehearsal on Thursday from 3:30 to 4:15. See calendar. The competition marching band is required to attend rehearsals Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30. Each person MUST have their instrument, a water bottle, and their drill chart, or they will not be allowed on the field, therefore leading to an unexcused absense.

football

Dress
All Marching students must bring or wear black socks and their marching shoes for the game. Band shirts must also be worn on game days. You may wear a previous year's shirt if you wish. Pit wears all black.


IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT THINGS FOR THE GAME, YOU WILL NOT GO! NO EXCEPTIONS.

IF you are planning on picking your child up from the stadium, please send a note to Mr. Scott BEFORE the game day; see Mr. Scott at the stadium before you leave.
