Monday

TLW:

Connect “My Box” sketches to math TAKS.

 

Objective:  Graphic Design and Math TAKS

Activities:

·         Measure your box with string:

o        Let X = Height – shortest side

o        ? X = Width - longest side (fold string to determine number of X’s or fractions)

o        ? X = Depth – the middle size (for part of string use halves, thirds or fourths)

·         Determine the RATIO of Height : Width : Depth

o        Example  -  X : 2 ½ X : 2 X    X : 2 2/3 X : 1 ½ X  

·         Use improper fractions to express the ratio

o        Example -   1 : 5/2 : 2     1 : 8/3 : 3/2

·         Open up original OBLIQUE sketch. 

o        Calculate the height and width in pixels.

o        Mouse over the end points of the front rectangle to determine the coordinates

o        Find the distance between the two end-points to determine the length

·         Determine the Ratio – were you close to the actual ratio?

Tuesday

TLW:

Use the resource of TIME to enhance math TAKS knowledge connecting learning to your box.

Objective:  Graphic Design

Wednesday

TLW:

Plot the oblique view of your box on graph paper from 4 views – horizontal and vertical reflections.  

Objective:  Graphic Design and Math TAKS

Activities:

·         Plot box on graph paper, keeping the same proportions. 

o        Use a scale factor of 20 x 20 pixels = one square

o        Record the coordinates of the top left corner of the rectangle.

·         Use the Pythagorean Theorem to determine the vertical and horizontal distance to move to create the end point of the depth lines at a 45 degree angle.

o        C is the ratio factor of the depth

o        Let X = A and B (Equal because an isosceles triangle is formed.)

o        Example -   2^2  = X^2 + X^2     (3/2)^2 = 2X^2  

o        Solve for X.

·         Repeat the process to reflect the box horizontally and increase the scale factor.

·         Repeat the process to reflect the box vertically and decrease the scale factor.

Finish planning on graph paper.

Thursday

TLW:

Draw you box in Paint using the coordinates used in your plans.

Objective: Applying Technology: Communicating Information and Ideas

Activities:

=      Draw 4 view of your box.

o        Open up a canvas that is 640 x 480

o        Draw the oblique sketches per directions on page 148, following graph paper plans.

o        Check that the coordinates match the plans

=      Open the photographs of your box in Microsoft Photo Editor. 

=      Crop extra background, keeping all photographs the same size.

=      Save with a descriptive identifier.

Friday

TLW:

Understand the value of pictures in communication and how photographic messages are designed.

Objective: Photographic Communication

Activities:

o        Finish editing the 8 photographs of your box:

§         Oblique: (1) top-right; (2)top-left; (3)bottom-right; (4)bottom-left

§         Isometric: (5)horizontal-left end-point; (6) horizontal right end-point; (7)vertical top end-point; (8)vertical bottom end-point

o        Save your 8 photographs of your box in a folder on your memory stick:

§         Examples:   images/box/obliquetop.jpg

o        QUIZ Math Modeling Applications: a^2 + b^2 = c^2

o        Observe Ratio-Proportion-Percent Photographs in PowerPoint from WesternGeco field trip 2005.

o        PLAN your POWERPOINT:

§         Plan your story board for the presentation of your box (partner OK)

§         Connection your box to Science, Technology and Humanities.

§         Brainstorm how you are going to tell a story and communicate the message of your box

§         Plan where you will you include your sketches.

Continue taking pictures of boxes around the school, your community and at home
