PURPOSE:

Blocker Middle School Science students wanted to see the damage done to the soft tissue of plants. No photos on the web could be found, therefore they developed this lab to get those photos. We would like for other students to try the experiment an let us know what you have found.

MATERIALS:

Collect two liter plastic bottles, masking tape, beans, sand, gravel, vermiculite, ozone machine, Schoenbein paper, ozone chamber (45 gallon aquarium), green house.

PROCEDURE:

Once you have the two liter bottles, cut them in half. Punch holes in the lids of the two liter bottles and put them back on the bottles. Place the bottom half of the bottle upright and turn the top half over and insert into the bottom half of the bottle. Place your name on the masking tape and put it on you planter.

Pour 150 ml of gravel in the planter, 300 ml of sand and vermiculite mixture (half and half). Mix the vermiculite and sand before placing them in the planter. Half sand and half vermiculite mixed thoroughly will work well.

We planted Kentucky Wonder Pole beans (more information about bean seeds) about 4-6 cm down in the soil. Press your finger in the soil to make a hole in the sand, drop the bean in. Note* We had trouble with Kentucky Wonder beans. They form vines that require poles. The poles do not fit into the ozone chamber, therefore we suggest a bean plant that grows into a bush. Examples that form bushes are bush green beans or soy beans. We used green beans because this is the type of bean found in many gardens in the south.

Add miracle grow plant food to water and pour 100 ml of this mixture over the beans. Make sure the planted beans have enough water each day, but more plant food is not needed. Now, you need to place the beans somewhere so they will get some sun. The growing process would take 7 to 10 days for the beans to start growing. They will grow good if they have the right things.

The sprouts will grow quickly, so divide up the plants and place some in the ozone chamber and some in the out in regular air. Keep a Journal of day to day progress. We encourage you to keep record of the plants' growth visually with a video camera or still shots. We found the reaction of the ozone is very fast and photos and video helped us to see how fast.

RESULTS:

We will include in this lesson, photos, and email for your questions, this lesson plan and hope you help us to collect data of damage done to plants due to ozone. Too much ozone killed our plant and will kill any plant. We feel that the research is correct, that ozone does cause damage. Please try different plants, and let us know what you've found.

CONCLUSION:

Ozone can cause cellular damage to plants as well as animals. The soft tissues of the body such at sinus, lungs, throat, eyes can be irritated and damaged the same way as the beans if ozone concentrations are high for several days.
