Computer Word-Processing Skills

Title: Fix It

Grade: 3-6

Objective: To teach students how to use word processing software to edit passage with gramatical, spelling, and punctuation errors.

Materials Needed:

  • A list of word processing terms (e.g. cursor, delete, hardcopy, softcopy, highlight, etc.)
  • Computer with LCD and overhead projector or a large TV/monitor;
  • Word Processing software
  • Hard copies of a selected paragraph typed with a number of errors.
  • (paragraph should already be installed on each computer and ready for editing).
  • Procedure:


  • Make sure students are familar with terms listed and are familar with keyboard.
  • Distribute copies of the paragraph to be corrected to students
  • Read the paragraph to students out loud
  • Give each student a chance to identify and correct an error in the passage
  • Make the corrections on tranparency while students make them on
  • their copies.

  • Students are now ready to go to computers to make corrections on the softcopy.
    Monitor:

  • How to open the file
  • How to use mouse or cursor to locate position to be corrected
  • How to delete items
  • How to correct items
  • How to save work
  • How to print work
  • How to close files and programs

  • Assessment:


    Collect all printed copies from students to check for success.
