Video on Mask History Discussion Sheet

To keep my students focused on a documentary pertaining to a lesson, I give them a set of questions that go along with the video. This helps them listen to the information and keep them focused on important sections I may want them to discuss in class. After they view the video, they are given an opportunity to reflect on the information for the class discussion of questions 4, 8 and 12.

  1. Write the name of the first culture mentioned in the video?
  2. Why did this culture make masks?
  3. What materials were used to make the masks?
  4. Do you think this culture's ritual would have had the same impact without the use of the masks? Explain your answer.
  5. Write the name of another culture mentioned in the video?
  6. Why did this culture make masks?
  7. What materials were used to make the masks?
  8. In which way do you think this culture could have improved the mask design, or would it need one at all? Explain your answer.
  9. Write a name of a third culture mentioned in the video?
  10. Why did this culture make masks?
  11. What iconographical elements are found in the mask?
  12. If you were to have this culture's ritual in your neighborhood, how would you design the mask?
