WHO:
Middle school girls whose interest and enthusiasm in science
and math and whose advancement to higher paying careers in
those field is often dampened by participation in traditional
mixed gender classes and activities
WHAT:
A girls' science club offering exposure to successful female
scientists as mentors and role models, practical activities
designed to expose them to a wider range of opportunities,
along with an ongoing reinforcement of a "can do" attitude
WHEN:
Monthly meetings featuring a prominent local female scientist
and exciting activities designed as a practical demonstration of
her field, supported by tutoring sessions
WHERE:
The classrooms at Lanier Middle School and labs, offices,
and businesses of scientific interest in the community
WHY:
The American Association of University Women's Educational
Foundation offers Eleanor Roosevelt Fellowship grants to
teachers whose proposals will support gender equity in their
classrooms. Martha Phelps-Borrowman, science teacher
at Lanier Middle School was awarded an Eleanor
Roosevelt Fellowship for 1995-1996 to implement the girls'
science club.
