PEOPLE PLACE
A MULTICULTURAL MAGNET CLUSTER CENTER

a child's view of the world

People Place is a Multicultural Magnet Center that gives Elementary students
an opportunity to 'visit' other countries. Students from two different
schools arrive at the Magnet Center with the idea of traveling around the
world. The first location the students visit is the USA/Texas room.
Students begin their day greeting children from other parts of our city.
They will understand that where we live, there are people from many
different parts of the world.  Students need to be sure they know where

they live.  We talk about how big our world is and how we can find
where we live.

There are six different countries at People Place. The countries easily
represent some of the diversity we find in Houston and also in the United
States. Each student will visit three of the six countries, but as a group
they will experience all six through sharing, debriefing, and follow up
activities that are shared with the visiting teachers. Students are divided
into six tour groups and will travel to their three countries.

As the students travel through the simulated countries, they will learn
about the culture, experience the food, wear articles of clothing, and look at the different kinds of shelter of each country.
