GTECH is a computer club for girls which I started in August 2002 school year through a grant I received from AAUW Eleanor Roosevelt Fellowship. The club met once a week for two hours, and parents supported us by supplying snacks. Click here to view a PowerPoint presentation I gave in Washington DC in August 2004 at an AAUW forum.
We started the first year with seventeen girls, and they created their own website.
Mrs. Phillips, our elementary science teacher also assited us.
In the second year we had twenty one girls, and our project that year was to build three computers from scratch with the help of Mrs. Ossorio, 6-8 Computer Technolgy Teacher, Mrs. Henry, our librarian, and Mr. McGinnis, our school's network specialist. The girls decided that we should donate two of the three computers to girls in our club and keep the thrid one at school. Indeed the girls completed builing three computers by May 2004.
The girls videotaped their activity, and they were able to produce a movie from it.
The third year we ventured into robotics with help of Mrs. Ossorio and Mrs. Henry. The girls were able to explore the concept of building structures and programming robotics. Click here to see some of the girls' pictures.
